recap: Mom’s focus shit the bed going home from germany, no spark at all. Sent it to dealership

They called today they’ve looked at it and come to the same conclusion as me, a dead ECU. IF they could find a used one to fit, they said it’d be around 800$. For a car that’s maybe worth 1200$....

Sooo, most likely time to shop for a “new” used car for her, welp. Stupid fords *grumble*

Sidenote: Test drove a BMW 118d because i was near the BMW dealer to drop my smashed phone off for repairs(yay luck?). Drove ok, i like the gearbox(auto-manual), and the blinkers actually work!!

That’s nuts. Why so expensive? The ECU on my F150 shit the bed and a refurbished one was less than $200. My truck is a bit older, but I can’t imagine the price of ECUs between it and a newer Focus is that different

A colleague had the same thing last year and for the two years before Mk2 Focus TDCi, things kept happening and the Ford garage kept fixing it, then the ECU went bust and she thought I can’t afford another car, but nor can I afford to keep fixing the car.

She called it a day and bought a petrol VW Polo and couldn’t be happier.

Other than the ECU, which I’m sure you can source at a junkyard for peanuts, what other parts will have to be changed if you were to fix it? Keys and immobilizer or something? Given your wrenching experience it seems fixable for far less than those $800.

Needs the key for the immob chip and ECU only, found the excact model number ECU but no keys for the car at the local scrapyard, and ford wasn’t able to guarentee they could reprogram all the ECU’s. Programming is only via Ford

a new one is 1750$. Ford being the only that can re-program and not adjusting prices for a 18mhz electronic box since it was new does weird shit man.

Unsure if able to, even if i get the keys along with it sadly, and it’d be wasted money if attempted. :/

you Can’t really compare the used F150 market to anything else.

with the amount of F150s on the road, junkyards have many. I’m sure there are F150 only junkyards too....

Recently my dad took on a job for a friend on a Ford Explorer Sport Trac. A series of issues with EGR and so forth that resulted in failing the ECU the rest of the way while attempting to fix. Fortunately here in the US used Ford ECUs are apparently not hard come by, nor men to reflash them.

Yea, that’s nuts that they haven’t adjusted their price at all. It probably costs all of $30 to produce too.

Stop fixing it once it’s a minor enough flaw you can live with or deafen it with the radio, never have to fix it again 8-)

Yeah i read around the mk2's are just as plagued with bad ECU’s, and those have immobilizers in the Dash cluster and stuff too. Some fords are nice, some just really aren’t. Kinda happy her old focus was totalled before it could start becoming a moneypit

It’s just like many cars, some are good, some not so good, when they start crapping on you, get shot of them.

All the money spent on R&D, programming, etc, and of course extra price just cuz new.

Can you find the parts on Ebay? Maybe German or British Ebay?

Kinja'd!!! Echo51 > duurtlang

Plenty of ECU’s on ebay, unsure if any of them are with keys, and none of them by a quick look seem to be the excact model “name” either. Unsure how picky the ECU’s are towards correct model number.

If you do find something useful and you need a German address (I assume the German market is much larger than the Danish one), let me know.

Most germans are super nice about shipping to denmark, even if not already set up on the auctions. I bought new door handles for my Escort from turkey once, even! but thanks!

If I were you, i’d check the junk yards, but considering you are in or near Germany, they might not have those like they do in states.

So next best thing I can think of is a junk yard online

Been there, found one with the excact model number ECU. No keys, so no immobilizer chip sadly. We do have pick-and-pay yards still :D

There’s quite a lot of kits on eBay U.K. with keys- mostly under £100. In theory they should swap straight in without programming.

Honda: Hold On Not Done Accelerating

Pontiac: Poor Old N** Thought It Was A Cadillac
